Storm Tips: How To Prevent Basement Flooding

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

Sometimes when it rains… it floods. Basements are particularly vulnerable to flooding during severe storms and while there are some things that you can do as a homeowner to protect your property. Here are a few tips to prevent basement flooding:

Wall well covers

There are a variety of these you can get. Some are clear, so that you can still get light in if yours has a window. I can personally attest to these, as I installed them after my basement flooded a few times about a year ago during a storm, and it has never happened again.

Keep valuables in plastic bins with lids

Often these bins will help to protect your possessions from water damage in the case of
flooding and can save you some heartache.
Clean sewers, drains, gutters, and downspouts
If you have a door that leads outside in your basement, make sure it is properly sealed

Have a sump pump ready at hand

Following these guidelines will prevent many instances of water damage. However, there are always unforeseeable circumstances, like cracks in the foundation. Of course, if water does get into the basement or the rest of the house, SERVPRO of Northbrook / Wheeling / Glencoe is ready to answer your call.
